The HitchHikers

Ok, we have some info on the HitchHikers!

And a photograph! Thanks Annette!

Hitchhikers

Grover Drawdy played keyboards and sang, Gene Craven on drums, Jack Dominey on guitar . Two other band members - waiting for further info. (Glenn said they were all Glynn county cops???? Gene Craven and Jack Dominey were probably wanted by the cops!!!! And Grover wasn't far behind).

Update from Annette Dominey Downie -

The Hitchhikers were a popular local band reaching its peak in popularity in the mid-sixites, 1964-65.
They played primarily at the City Recreation Center, known back then as the "Wreck Hall"
every Friday night.  The Band also played regular " gigs" at the Glynco Navy Base Teen Club and the
Officers Club.

They competed in The Battle of The Bands, an area competition held only once in downtown Brunswick,
where numerous bands were playing at the same time and moving around in various downtown location spots.
The streets were blocked off for this musical event and the Hitchhikers came in 2nd place.

Gene Craven played drums.  After graduation, he served in the military and settled  in Texas.

In 2004, he returned to Glynn County where he still resides.  He is retired but still active with his music

and drums.  Gene may be contacted at 912-261-2916.

Jack Dominey played rhythm guitar.  He owns and manages a welding and machine shop in Brunswick
and resides locally.  He is still active with his music.

Glenn Kemp played lead guitar.  He worked and resided locally until his death in 1987.

Grover Drawdy was lead singer, played the keyboard and sax.  He works as a pipe fitter at a nuclear
plant in Illinois, where he presently resides.

James Williams played bass guitar.  He worked and retired from Glynn County Public Works in 2004
and currently resides in Brantley County.

Not one of these guys claim they remember anything about the police?

Maybe there was just an "experience", definitely not employment!

Many Thanks to John Stevens, a big contributor to this Web site, and to Annette Dominey Downie for the new information!

A Brunswick, GA. band from the 1960's. We think all of the band members became Brunswick policemen! We need band pictures and other information. Please contact Andy Patterson at [email protected] or Dave Strickland at [email protected] if you have anything!
